Ingredients:
- Eggs
- Water
- Onion peels
- 1 tablespoon of salt
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 2 tablespoons of vinegar
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil or a piece of fat bacon
- Fresh green leaves from the garden (any kind)
- Gauze or thin dress stockings
- Thread
Instructions:
1. Cooking the eggs:
Thoroughly wash and clean the eggs with dish soap. Boil them in a deep pot of water over low heat for 15 minutes. Immediately transfer the boiled eggs to cold water to facilitate easier peeling when serving.
2. Preparing the eggs for painting:
Moisten the surface of each boiled egg and place a chosen green garden leaf on it.
Wrap the egg in a piece of stretched smooth gauze and tie it securely. Repeat for each egg.
2. Painting Grandma’s Transylvanian Easter Eggstravaganza:
In a pot, combine as many onion peels you can with water, vinegar, salt, and sugar. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat. Submerge the wrapped eggs in the mixture and boil for approximately 10 minutes (over very low heat), turning them occasionally with a wooden spoon for even coloring. For a darker tint, leave them in the pot for up to 20 minutes. Add more vinegar, during evaporation or when you think it’s necessary.
3. Finishing Grandma’s Transylvanian Easter Eggstravaganza:
Carefully remove the eggs from the pot one by one and immediately unwrap them to prevent the leaf from sticking to the surface.
Let them drain a bit. While the eggs are still hot, brush them with fat bacon or olive oil.
4. Serving Grandma’s Transylvanian Easter Eggstravaganza:
Arrange the painted and brushed eggs in a green grass basket or on a decorative Easter napkin. Serve alongside your Easter horderves (hors d’oeuvres) or festive Easter serving plates. You can see some ideas on the photos below also for other heavy protein meals.
